China's titanium dioxide industry focuses on three things

In 2015, titanium dioxide continued its weakness for the first three years, and prices continued to decline. Prices were generally low, and most manufacturers were in the cost line or even losing money. The key to the company's desire to make a breakthrough is to accelerate the increase of production concentration, accelerate the pace of corporate restructuring, and increase the research and development of the chlorination core technology. This is the information that the reporter obtained from the 2015 national titanium dioxide industry annual meeting held in Kunming, Yunnan in mid-November.

Accelerate the promotion of industrial concentration
The large-scale development of China's titanium dioxide industry started in 1998. In the past 17 years, no matter whether it is production capacity or output, it has been rising rapidly. By 2015, the industry's capacity will reach 3.201 million tons per year.

In recent years, China's titanium dioxide industry has made considerable progress, especially through technological advancement. It has paid close attention to energy conservation, environmental protection, and clean production. The gap between product quality and foreign products has gradually narrowed, and the competitiveness of enterprises has continuously increased. The industry's productivity (quantity) concentration Continuous improving. So far, the China Titanium Dioxide Industry has 7 enterprise group-type manufacturers with 2 or more factories. There are four listed companies based on titanium dioxide.

According to statistics, in 2014, the output of titanium dioxide in China reached 24.35 million tons, an increase of 280,000 tons over the previous year, an increase of 13.0%. The actual output of the top 6 manufacturers reached 100,000 tons or more, and the total output exceeded 1.05 million tons, accounting for 43.0% of the national total. However, there are still considerable gaps compared to the world. In 2014, in addition to China, there were 18 titanium dioxide producers and 48 factories worldwide, with a total capacity of 4.455 million tons, of which the top six companies had a total capacity of 4,041,000 tons, accounting for 90.1%.

Accelerate the progress of restructuring within the industry
With fewer and fewer manufacturers, the increasing international trend of individual manufacturers is also the development direction of China's titanium dioxide industry. Industry restructuring is a natural development trend.

Bi Sheng, director of the National Titanium Divider Center of the Chemical Productivity Promotion Center, said that among the several reorganization events that have occurred in the industry at the moment, it is notable that the proposed Henan Yonglilian has acquired Sichuan Longsheng Titanium. The significance is the impact on the structure of domestic titanium dioxide industry. The annual production capacity of the two companies, Lili Lian and Long Lian, totaled 490,000 tons, accounting for 20.1% of the national total. The right to speak in the domestic market is self-evident.

At present, when the economic environment enters the era of moderately stable development, the market capacity of titanium dioxide cannot increase sharply. Although there are a lot of production capacity for closures and semi-discontinuations, there will always be new production capacity released each year, which will inevitably aggravate the imbalance in supply and demand. It can be predicted that under the dual pressures of the market and environmental protection, in the coming period, SMEs with an industry scale of 100,000 tons, especially 50,000 tons or less, will gradually enter the shuffle, and the number of manufacturers in the industry will continue to decrease. Within 5 years, it may be reduced to less than 30, which is in line with international development trends.

Increase the chlorination research and development efforts
Chlorination is the trend in the development of international titanium dioxide. In 2014, the chlorination projects completed and put into operation in China were Jinzhou Titanium Industry, Yunnan Xinli, and Luohe Xingmao. The combined output of these three companies was 43530 tons, accounting for 1.78% of the total output of titanium dioxide in the country. The newly added chlorination process capacity in 2015 was a 60,000-ton/year facility.

Bi Sheng said that although, at the national level, the chlorination process has been encouraged since 2005, the development in the past 10 years has been bleak. Except for the first four projects, no industry or foreign companies have actually initiated the implementation of the chlorination project, and none of the completed companies have run smoothly.

Bi Sheng believes that one of the major obstacles to the development of chlorination in China is the lack of key core technologies, including chlorination, oxidation, and docking process technologies, as well as related equipment technologies. In addition, high investment is daunting. Of the four existing chlorination projects, two have high-titanium slag projects, and the payback period for investment costs of more than one billion yuan and even several billion yuan is long.

Bi Sheng said that there is no doubt that the chlorination process is the development direction of China's titanium dioxide industry, but it will be a matter of years before the industrialization and scale-up, not the immediate or immediate. The reason is simple: No matter what the so-called foreign technology is introduced, or self-developed autonomous technology, there is no entity to verify that the key core technical issues have been solved. It is also necessary to increase the research and development of the core technology of chlorination and achieve a true breakthrough.

“The operational prospects of the four existing chlorination projects are difficult to describe in terms of 'optimism.' These projects must achieve the goal of achieving compliance, production, and efficiency and competitiveness. There is still a difficult way to go. Currently, it is not appropriate to imitate and follow suit. "Bi Sheng also reminded the industry.

The sulfuric acid method has disadvantages and disadvantages compared to the chlorination method, but it also has its own advantages. It is the basis of the Chinese titanium dioxide industry. As long as we do a good job in environmental protection and clean production, and do a good job in the recycling economy industry chain, in the future for a long time, the Chinese titanium dioxide industry will still be the main sulfuric acid method, supplemented by chlorination.
